Thursday 9/24

Journal:

What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?

I handed out midterm progress reports today to be signed. It is 15 extra credit points if you bring it back by next Tuesday 9/29.

We then finished the notes from yesterday using this PowerPoint, and this notes outline (also download pg 2).

HW:  none

Wednesday 9/23

Journal:  What is the atomic number of Iron? Chemical symbol? How many protons and electrons?

Today we did these two worksheets:  Atom or Molecule? and Making Molecules.

Whatever you didn't finish is homework.

HW:  anything left on worksheets

Tuesday 9/22

Journal:

Use 4 of the 5 journal minutes to study your vocab words. In the last minute, write about one of the words. Did you know it before this class? What do you know about it? Can you identify any Latin roots? How can you remember what it means?

We went over the article "Democritus' Idea of an Atom" and the Pre-/Post-Reading activity that accompanied it, then turned it in.

We then started notes about matter. You will need this powerpoint, this notes outline plus side 2 of the outline, and this periodic table to complete the notes. We only got about halfway through; we will finish tomorrow.

HW:  none

Monday 9/21

Journal:

Write a paragraph explaining what you know about:
  1. matter
  2. atoms
  3. molecules

Tell how they’re different and how they’re related.

I gave you the class today to define vocabulary for the "All About Matter" unit. Write all words and definitions on the "magic weave" we made in class Thursday. Come see me if you need one. The words to define are on the new I can statements.

HW: Read the article "Democritus' Idea of an Atom" (that's it, don't do the review or anything else, just read it),

Thursday 9/17

Journal:

Can you divide a kiss forever? Explain.

I gave you time at the beginning of class to teach each of the objectives from the "What is Science" unit to a partner, then get them initialed for extra credit. I collected anyone's that was finished.

We then made a "magic weave" foldable for your new vocabulary, then started defining the key words on your new I can statements using the magic weave. We will finish that on Monday.

HW:  none

Wednesday 9/16

Journal:

What is an atom? What is a molecule? How are they similar?

Today we did an activity called "Dividing a Kiss." Basically you just try to cut Hershey's kisses into the smallest pieces possible with a plastic knife. This is the write-up for it.

HW:  none

Tuesday 9/15

Journal:

No journal today. We took the last day of data.

The rest of class was given to finish the mastery quiz (analysis and conclusion).

I also collected your safety contract and metric system practice today.
