Thursday 10/1

Journal:

1. What are the states of matter?
2. Describe each state of matter in terms of proximity of particles and speed of motion of particles.

Today we finished the demos from yesterday, then turned that paper in. If you were gone today, make sure you finish the analysis and conclusion of that worksheet and give it to me when you return.

HW:  none
REMINDERS:  Mastery quiz next Thursday 10/8

Wednesday 9/30

Journal:

Today we started a series of demonstrations to help you see that matter is made of particles.

Here is the worksheet for the activity. If you missed class today, you can copy someone's notes.

HW:  none

Tuesday 9/29

Journal:

  1. Make a simple drawing of a Boron (B) atom.
  2. What limitations or flaws are there to this type of model?

Today we reviewed the strengths and limitations of our model of the atom and came up with a chart for our notes like this (copy this into your notes if you weren't here):

STRENGTHS (THINGS THAT ARE ACCURATE):

  • shows charges
  • shows energy levels of e-
  • shows protons, electrons, and neutrons and relative locations of each

LIMITATIONS (INACCURACIES)

  • size and scale of atom not appropriately shown
  • e-s aren't moving

Then we played a game outside making "human atoms" and identifying the correct number and location of the subatomic particles of various elements (no makeup necessary for this).

HW:  none

Monday 9/28

Journal:

  1. What “subatomic particles” are atoms made of? What are the charges of each? Where in the atom are each of the subatomic particles found?
  2. How do we know atoms exist if we cannot see them?

Today we handed in the Atom or Molecule?/Making Molecules assignment, then took notes and practiced making models of atoms. Please get the notes from a classmate and the assignment from me.

HW: none

Friday 9/25

Journal:

We watched this video clip and took notes for the journal today.

Today we finished the atom/molecule notes (use this PowerPoint, this notes outline, this worksheet, and the periodic table).

Then we went over the assignment I assigned on Wednesday (Atom or Molecule? and Making Molecules) and assigned part C of Atom or Molecule? as homework.

HW:  Part C of Atom or Molecule?

Thursday 9/24

Journal:

What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?

I handed out midterm progress reports today to be signed. It is 15 extra credit points if you bring it back by next Tuesday 9/29.

We then finished the notes from yesterday using this PowerPoint, and this notes outline (also download pg 2).

HW:  none

Wednesday 9/23

Journal:  What is the atomic number of Iron? Chemical symbol? How many protons and electrons?

Today we did these two worksheets:  Atom or Molecule? and Making Molecules.

Whatever you didn't finish is homework.

HW:  anything left on worksheets
