Monday 10/26

Journal:

Today we played a game to review for the density mastery quiz. Here is the powerpoint I used. Please use it to study tonight.

HW:  Study for quiz

Thursday 10/22

Journal:

I had you spend the journal time today reading this list of possible science fair questions and marking those you think you could work on.

We spent the rest of class working on this science fair packet. This packet is due next Monday 10/26.

HW:  Science Fair packet due Monday 10/26
Reminders:  Sign up for science fair by 11/6, science fair data due 11/20, presentation board due 12/1

Wednesday 10/21

Journal:

1. What is the density of water?
2. How do you calculate the volume of a rectangular solid?

Today we did a lab calculating the density of sponges and soaps. You can get the lab sheet and materials from me. If you missed class today, please see me for makeup.

HW:  none
Reminders:  Sign up for science fair by 11/6

Tuesday 10/20

Journal:

1. How can you tell the volume of an object that isn't rectangular?
2. What is the volume of the seahorse below?

Today we did a lab with metal cubes and density. Here is the writeup for it. If you need supplies to make up the lab, please come see me.

We turned in the lab today.

HW:  none
Reminders:  Sign up for science fair by Friday 11/6

Monday 10/19

Journal:

Write about something you've learned in any class this year so far.

Today we turned in your Mass, Volume, Density worksheet, late/hall passes from term 1, and the Liquid Volume lab from last Tuesday. Please get those turned in right away (last day for term 1 is tomorrow) if you weren't here today.

Then we went on a "density field trip" around the school.

HW:  none, but the deadline to commit to our school's science fair is November 6th. We will start work on science fair this week, but keep in mind you will need to be making a decision about that soon.

Tuesday 10/13

Journal:

  1. What is the formula for density? How can you remember it?
  2. If a metal cube has a mass of 10g and it is 2cm high by 2cm long by 2cm wide, what is its density?
  3. What is mass? volume? density?

Today we did a lab practicing measuring volume in preparation to measure density. Here is the writeup page, but you will need to see me to make up the actual lab.

HW:  none, but I will collect mass, density, and volume worksheets and late and hall passes next Monday (next day of class) as well as your liquid volume lab, so be prepared
REMINDERS:  Schoolwide testing tomorrow (no classes); Fall Break Thurs/Fri

Monday 10/12

Journal:

Today I collected phases action heroes, then we went over the mass, volume, density worksheet from last week. If you are still not finished, please have it done by tomorrow 10/13. We will turn it in then.

HW:  mass, density, volume worksheet

Friday 10/9

Journal:

What units are typically used for mass, volume, and density?

Today we watched Bill Nye videos about atoms and molecules as a review of that section of this unit. No makeup work is necessary for today.

HW: mass, volume, density worksheet (due 10/13) and phases action heroes (due 10/12)

Thursday 10/8

Journal:

  1. What are the strengths and limitations to the modern model of the atom?

Today we took our first Structure of Matter mastery quiz. If you missed it, please come find me for a time to make it up. It goes on term 1, so it will need to be before Monday 10/19.

Then we did this worksheet. You may need a blue textbook pg. 24 to help you. I have the key so you can check your work. The worksheet will be due Tues 10/13.

HW:  phases action heroes will be collected Monday 10/12

Wednesday 10/7

Journal:

Make a diagram of each of these atoms:

a. Nitrogen (N)
b. Carbon (C)
c. Fluorine (F)

Today I gave you the class time to finish Phases Action Heroes. Some students turned them in, everyone else will turn them in Monday 10/12.

HW:  action heroes due Monday 10/12; Study for mastery quiz tomorrow

Tuesday 10/6

Journal:

For each of the phase changes, say whether each is a cooling (heat loss) or heating (heat gain) process:  condensation, evaporation, sublimation, freezing, and melting.

Today we took notes on this notes outline (copy a friend's that was in class).

Then we started making "Phases Action Heroes." We will finish tomorrow.

HW:  none
Reminders:  Mastery Quiz Thursday 10/8

Monday 10/5

Journal:

1. What is a phase change?
2. What are some examples of phase changes?

Today we finished some left over demonstrations from last week. No makeup required for that.

Then we did a "role play" where you were in groups acting out solid, liquid, and gas particles.

That was it! No makeup today.

HW:  none

Thursday 10/1

Journal:

1. What are the states of matter?
2. Describe each state of matter in terms of proximity of particles and speed of motion of particles.

Today we finished the demos from yesterday, then turned that paper in. If you were gone today, make sure you finish the analysis and conclusion of that worksheet and give it to me when you return.

HW:  none
REMINDERS:  Mastery quiz next Thursday 10/8
